How to request parts made to drawing

The drawing, material and quantity details that help define a machining quotation.

ENS Makina San · Manufacturing guides

Start a made-to-drawing enquiry with a drawing defining the part geometry, the material and the required quantity. The application, critical dimensions and mating parts help establish a useful manufacturing scope.

A PDF drawing can support an initial review. If a 3D model is available, specify its format. A model does not always replace a drawing that defines functional dimensions and tolerances.

What should the drawing include?

  • Sufficient views and dimensions to define the part.
  • Material designation and any applicable technical specification.
  • Critical dimensions, fits and geometric tolerances where needed.
  • Surface, heat-treatment or coating requirements.
  • Drawing number and revision.

Unnecessarily tight tolerances can increase costs. Base tolerance requirements on the function of the component and how they will be inspected.

What else should be included?

State the quantity, target delivery date and operating conditions. Mention mating parts and sample availability. If you send multiple revisions, clearly identify the version to be quoted.

What if a drawing is not ready?

Photos, available measurements and sample information can support an initial discussion. The dimensions and approval scope must be clarified before production. A worn sample may differ from the original design dimensions.
