ENS Makina San · Manufacturing guides · Updated:
A tolerance defines acceptable limits for a dimension or geometric feature. Surface requirements describe another aspect of the component’s function. Requesting a part to be “precise” does not by itself establish a usable manufacturing or acceptance definition.
Identify the functional dimensions
Highlight dimensions that influence assembly or operation: a bearing seat, a bushing’s mating relationship or a shoulder position. Explain why they matter. Applying the same tight limits to every surface may add work without addressing the actual function; removing a necessary limit to reduce price is equally inappropriate.
Dimensions, geometry and surfaces are different
A diameter can be within its size limits while a geometric relationship or surface requirement remains unsatisfied. State dimensional limits, reference features and surface notes on the appropriate drawing regions. Agree how the result will be assessed rather than assuming the process name defines acceptance.
Why there is no universal CNC tolerance
Part dimensions, material, workholding, tool access and temperature can influence results. Sandvik Coromant’s turning guidance identifies stable clamping and correct tool centre height as relevant factors. This is general process information, not a promise of one tolerance for every ENS component.
Before you send the drawing
Identify critical features, current revision and the sequence of heat treatment or coating. Request first-part approval or reporting before quotation. Review CNC turning and drawing-based manufacturing for the commercial next step.

Should every dimension have a tight tolerance?
Limits should match the function. Unnecessary tight limits can add processing and inspection, while essential assembly requirements must remain defined.
Can CNC turning meet every tolerance?
No. Dimensions, material, workholding and tool access must be assessed with the required limits.
Is an inspection report automatically included?
Specify reporting and acceptance requirements in the RFQ. Identical documentation is not assumed for every order.
